Don’t Let Excessive Underarm Sweat Keep You Down

sweaty arm pit

Everyone sweats. An intense workout, an important business meeting or a day at the beach are activities that may activate any of the 4 million sweat glands in the body. Sweating is normal and keeps you comfortable, hydrates the skin and balances the body’s fluids and electrolytes.  But excessive sweating, especially under the arms, is unnecessary and is more of a hindrance than a help.

In people with axillary hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands under the arms remain active even when unnecessary. Instead of helping to keep your body comfortable, excessive sweat is an annoyance. It can ruin your clothes, make you self-conscious, affect your relationships and be an expensive nuisance.  If you find yourself sweating so much that you avoid social or professional situations, then it’s time to take action.

Though a third of people suffering from bothersome underarm sweat say it negatively impacts their quality of life, less than 40 percent of those affected seek medical treatment according to the National Institutes of Health.

When to Call a Medical Professional

It is estimated that excessive underarm sweat affects nearly 4 million people in the U.S. and can be debilitating and have a negative impact on lifestyle and quality of life.  Contact your physician if you:

  • Have prolonged and unexplained sweating
  • Avoid social events due to anxiety about sweating
  • Experience anxiety about intimate relationships because of sweat
  • Avoid certain clothing or fabrics because of sweat
  • Limit daily activities due to the fear of sweat

Treating Excessive Sweating (Hyperhydrosis)

miradry laserMost people are not aware of solutions beyond oral medications and antiperspirants. Although oral medications and prescription antiperspirants provide temporary relief, many are largely ineffective. However, there is an in-office procedure that effectively provides a lasting reduction in underarm sweat.

The miraDry procedure, cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, delivers energy noninvasively to the underarm sweat glands in a 60 minute procedure, and destroys the glands. Sweat glands do not grow back, and you can liveconfidently as never before. Studies have shown patients treated with the miraDry Procedure experienced an average sweat reduction of 82 percent.  Patient satisfaction with the procedure is also very high with a clinical study reporting over 90 percent patient satisfaction.
