RHINOPLASTY

A subtle change to the nose can change the appearance of an entire face. Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, can be performed to alter the natural shape of the nose, or correct the appearance that may have been altered from an injury or during prior surgery.

What can rhinoplasty accomplish?

A nose surgery can address several concerns or issues.

• Size (in relation to other facial structures)

• Width (at the base)

• Profile (with visible humps or depressions on the bridge)

• Nasal tip (too large or bulbous, drooping, or upturned)

• Nostrils (too large, wide, or upturned)

• Nasal asymmetry and deviation

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, with patients returning home the day of the surgery. The rhinoplasty requires either general or local anesthesia for your comfort during the procedure. Incisions are made inside the nostrils. Sometimes, a tiny, inconspicuous incision is also made across the columella (the bit of skin that separates the nostrils). This is referred to as “open rhinoplasty”. The soft tissues of the nose are separated from the underlying structures, then the cartilage and bone are reshaped as needed.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Bruising may be present for approximately two weeks. It may take several months for the swelling to fully subside and up to a year for the outcome to fully refine. Results of the treatment are permanent, though natural aging will still occur which may include slight reshaping of the cartilage or movement of the nasal tissue.
