What is SmartLipo™?

Using a high-powered laser, SmartLipo™ is a new body sculpting procedure with less downtime and side-effects than traditional liposuction. Like traditional liposuction, SmartLipo™ involves the removal of fat cells from the body. It is designed for those who have specific areas of localized fat deposits and who have tried unsuccessfully to eliminate them through diet, exercise and weight loss.

How does the SmartLipo™ procedure work?

A very small cannula (tube) containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away. The laser energy also interacts with the dermis, resulting in collagen shrinkage.

How does SmartLipo™ vary from traditional liposuction?

Due to the cannula's small size, SmartLipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling, and bruising - and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Because general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe, with only minimal side effects. And because the cannula is smaller than a cannula used in conventional liposuction, it allows for treatment in areas of localized fat deposits where traditional liposuction could potentially cause damage.

Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo™?

If you have areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then you are a candidate for SmartLipo™. Ideal candidates are in good health, of normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results.

How quick is the recovery time?

After the procedure, a compression bandage is worn by the patient for several days to several weeks, depending on the body area being treated. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few days.
