Chuma Chike-Obi, MD is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that joined our team of physicians in 2013. Dr. Chike-Obi recently shared with us, among other things, why he decided to become a plastic surgeon and the rewarding experience of mentoring students.

Who or what inspired you to become a plastic surgeon?

I discovered plastic surgery as a second-year medical student. I met several plastic surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania who supported my decision and mentored me early in the process. I was most drawn to the way I observed plastic surgeons molding human tissue in creative, artistic ways to help patients meet their goals. I still consider plastic surgery the most exciting, innovative, and rewarding field in all of medicine.

What is your favorite procedure to perform?

I enjoy my breast enhancement procedures the most. I find these artistically challenging, and extremely rewarding in terms of patient outcomes and satisfaction.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?

I love spending time with my family. Currently we spend most of our time enjoying the arrival of my three month old son, Ari. I also enjoy reading, traveling, and working out.

Are you involved with any charitable organizations?

My staff and I sponsor a family for the holidays every year. I am also really into mentoring so I speak with local premed student groups about the field of medicine whenever possible. I started dedicating some time to mentoring because I realized that many students who are interested in medicine have insufficient access to guidance and mentoring. This is particularly true in certain underrepresented minority populations. As a mentor my job is to paint an exciting but realistic picture of what medicine is all about, so that only the most motivated and most passionate students pursue it.

What brought you to Austin?

I have lived in Austin for three and a half years now. My wife attended law school at UT so she was already aware of how great Austin is. A great woman introduced us to the WD family, which sealed the deal for us.

What do like most about Austin?

I love how dynamic and progressive the city is, while still maintaining a relatively low-key, unpretentious vibe. It’s also a very pretty city to live in with the lake, the hills, and the trails.

Where is your favorite place to travel to?

I enjoy visiting France. The culture is great, the architecture is awesome, and the food is to die for.

What are your favorite foods/favorite restaurants?

My current favorite restaurant in Austin is Olamaie. Café Josie is a close second. I also think Wu Chow does a great job.

I’m a really big sweet tooth! Pecan pie is pretty high on the list, but there are several contenders for ‘favorite dessert.’

What is something unusual and interesting you can share with us about your family?

My paternal grandfather met and shook hands with Albert Einstein!

What kind of jobs did you have before becoming a doctor?

All kinds of odd jobs!  Fast food server, cutlery sales person, office work. My mother can provide you with a full list!
