Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job or nose surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that alters the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty may be necessary after an injury, or can be performed to transform the appearance of the nose for a more balanced, symmetrical or enhanced shape. In some cases, rhinoplasty corrects breathing restrictions acquired at birth, or as the result of injury or aging.

Westlake Dermatology is a leading provider of rhinoplasty in Texas. We now offer rhinoplasty procedures at our University Park location in Dallas. Our experienced, skilled plastic surgeon and caring staff are dedicated to helping patients safely improve the aesthetics and functioning of the nose, to look and feel their best.

What Results Can Rhinoplasty Provide?

Nose surgery can minimize or alter the overall appearance of the nose for more harmony between the nose and face. For some patients, nose surgery is necessary to correct functional issues. Rhinoplasty may provide the following results:

  • Reduce or enlarge the size of the nose
  • Eliminate visible humps or bumps in the nose
  • Correct a bulbous, drooping or upturned nasal tip
  • Correct crookedness or asymmetry
  • Minimize overly large or wide nostrils
  • Address breathing issues
  • Repair a damaged or broken nose

How is a Nose Job Performed?

Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, with patients returning home the day of the surgery. The rhinoplasty requires either general or local anesthesia for your comfort during the procedure. Incisions are made inside the nostrils. Sometimes, a tiny, inconspicuous incision is also made across the columella (the bit of skin that separates the nostrils). This is referred to as “open rhinoplasty”. The soft tissues of the nose are separated from the underlying structures, then the cartilage and bone are reshaped as needed.

To create the best final result your surgeon will consider all aspects of your face including the jawline, cheeks, skin condition, and the overall shape and characteristics of your nose. Our goal is to enhance the aesthetic of the nose while maintaining harmony with your other facial features.

What Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?

Most rhinoplasty procedures are followed by a relatively quick recovery period. Bruising may be present for approximately two weeks. It may take several months for the swelling to fully subside and up to a year for the outcome to fully refine. Results of the treatment are permanent, though natural aging will still occur which may include slight reshaping of the cartilage or movement of the nasal tissue.

The following timeline is typical of what patients can expect:

1-3 Days: Patients may experience mild pain or discomfort which may be relieved with prescription medication.

7-10 Days: Stitches or splints, if used, will be removed during this time.

2 Weeks: Most patients feel comfortable returning to work, school, or other light to moderate activities during this time.

4 Weeks: A return to moderate activity is possible after one month, when most swelling has subsided. It’s important to continue to avoid activities that could result in injury to the nose.

Rhinoplasty results will keep improving until approximately 1 year after surgery as swelling continues to subside.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Any individual in good general health who wishes to improve the appearance of function of their nose is a candidate for rhinoplasty. A consultation with a surgeon can help you decide if nose surgery is for you.

What is non-surgical (liquid) rhinoplasty?

If you are not ready to undergo surgery you may be able to benefit from a liquid rhinoplasty. This non-surgical procedure reshapes the nose through temporary dermal fillers like Restylane. Unlike rhinoplasty surgery, this procedure requires virtually no downtime. The results of a liquid rhinoplasty typically last for about a year.
