While shaving and waxing are common methods of hair removal, they can be inconvenient and often lead to skin irritation. There are various hair removal creams, lotions, and some gimmicky products on the market to eliminate unwanted hair, but many of them prove to be ineffective or, in some cases, pose risks to the skin. Laser hair removal is the safest and most efficient way to remove unwanted facial or body hair while eliminating razor burn and the “shadow” effect caused by shaving.

Laser Hair Removal in San Antonio: We are pleased to offer laser hair removal services at both of our Olmos Park and Alamo Heights locations in San Antonio. Our licensed medical aestheticians are committed to helping our patients live hair free.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal employs infrared light energy to transform into heat, effectively leading to the destruction of hair follicles. Hair grows in three cycles. Follicular destruction takes place during the anagen phase, where it causes the most impact. The computer-guided system gently disables hundreds of hair follicles in less than one second.

The procedure is relatively painless and offers a permanent solution for eliminating unwanted or embarrassing body hair. Furthermore, since the hair is entirely eradicated from the follicle, laser hair removal prevents the “shadow” effect that some people encounter with shaving or waxing.

From what areas of the body can hair be removed?

Laser hair removal can be performed on all parts of the body including the cheeks, lip, legs, arms, underarms, and back, as well as sensitive areas like the bikini line, ears, nose, chest, and nipples. The most popular treatment areas for women include the underarms (axilla), legs, bikini, lip, and chin, while popular areas for men are the chest and back.

How effective is laser hair removal?

Laser-based hair removal proves highly effective, with numerous patients experiencing substantial hair reduction after just a few sessions. It’s most effective for individuals with a combination of darker hair and lighter skin, as the laser light is less absorbed by the surrounding skin. However, advancements in laser technology have made it possible to effectively treat patients with darker skin or lighter hair. As is the case with any procedure, individual results can vary.

Can laser hair removal be performed on dark skin tones

Laser hair removal has long been discouraged for those with dark skin. However, our San Antonio locations use the Candela GentleMax devices which are designed to be safe for all skin types (including Fitzpatrick Skin Type 3 and higher). How many laser hair removal treatments are necessary?

Laser hair removal systems can only treat active hair follicles. For optimal results, we recommend 6 treatments varying between six and ten weeks apart.  Results vary by person, though, and additional treatments may be necessary to fully remove hair growth.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Most patients find laser hair removal quite tolerable, usually requiring no prior numbing. Many liken the sensation of the laser to a brief snap akin to a rubber band against the skin. If a patient does find the treatment uncomfortable, a skin numbing agent can be applied, though this is typically unnecessary. Following the procedure, there is no pain or downtime once the laser is removed from the skin.
