There are a variety of factors that influence the time and effort (and thus cost) required to perform a liposuction procedure. These include:

  1. Body Mass Index: Patients with a higher body mass index (BMI) require a higher volume of fat to be removed in order to achieve their desired result. BMI is a measure of body mass based on a combination of the patient’s height and weight.
  2. Number of Treatment Areas: The total cost for liposuction of the abdomen alone is far less than liposuction on the abdomen, flanks, and waist. A typical liposuction procedure covers three or more treatment areas.
  3. Treatment Area Location: Some areas of the body are more difficult to treat or take more time to treat compared to other areas. For example, liposuction of the neck area is typically more costly and time consuming compared to liposuction of the arms.
  4. Degree of Difficulty: Liposuction procedures can be more difficult to perform if the patient has a history of significant weight fluctuations or has had previous liposuction surgeries.

There are several variables specific to rhinoplasty that play a significant role in determining total procedure cost, including:

  1. Nasal Issues: Rhinoplasty procedures become more complex (and costly) for patients who have nasal injuries, nasal obstructions, or a deviated septum. These individuals will require functional rhinoplasty to correct both the functionality and appearance of their nose.
  2. Cartilage Grafts: Some rhinoplasty procedures require cartilage grafts to add volume or stability to the nose. This additional procedure step increases the total procedure cost. The cost varies depending on the area that the graft must be harvested from.
  3. Revision Rhinoplasty: As discussed in this blog post, revision rhinoplasty requires advanced physician expertise (and is thus more costly) compared to traditional rhinoplasty.
  4. Ethnic Rhinoplasty: Various ethnic traits of the nose, like thicker skin, wide bridges, or narrow nostrils, sometimes make the procedure more complex and costly.

A likely explanation for the variance in blepharoplasty pricing is that there is no distinction within the data set in regards to the type of eyelid surgery each user reported. Patients that have an upper and lower eyelid surgery (referred to as a quad blepharoplasty) will pay significantly more than surgery on just the lower eyelids.

As with many other cosmetic procedures, the cost of Botox varies from patient to patient due to unique individual needs. Botox treatments are priced according to the number of Botox units used during the procedure. The more units needed, the higher the total cost of the procedure will be. A more accurate comparison for Botox would be to compare unit prices, but unfortunately this data was not available.

There are a couple of factors that influence how many Botox units a patient will need:

  • The number of facial areas treated
  • The strength of the targeted facial muscle
  • Gender (Men typically have larger facial muscles and require more Botox units)
  • Metabolism (Individuals with higher metabolism levels will need more units)

The most significant factor that influences the price for a tummy tuck surgery is the type of technique utilized. Abdominoplasty procedures can be classified as a mini tummy tuck, standard tummy tuck, or extended tummy tuck, depending on the amount of excess fat removal and abdominal muscle tightening required.

  • Mini Tummy Tuck: Removes a limited quantity of fat below the belly button. Mini tummy tucks are the least expensive technique as it is the quickest and easiest to perform.
  • Standard Tummy Tuck: This procedure removes a higher volume of fat and excess skin compared to a mini tummy tuck. It is more time consuming and difficult to perform, and thus more expensive.
  • Extended Tummy Tuck: The most costly tummy tuck technique, an extended tummy tuck removes more excess skin and fat than a standard tummy tuck, and also addresses the hips (love handles).

The cost of a breast lift can vary greatly based on the type of lift performed and/or whether or not an implant is utilized:

  • Breast Lift Technique: Many breast lifts can be classified as either mini or traditional depending on how extensive the lift is. Mini breast lift procedures address mild ptosis; make them less difficult and expensive. Traditional breast lift procedures are more costly as they address sever breast drooping (below the inframammary fold).
  • Breast Implants: Some breast lift patients may want to increase the volume of their breasts along with lifting them. In these cases a breast implant can be utilized. However, this adds a significant cost to the procedure.

Each individual patient has differing needs, and thus different pricing. There are two main variables which contribute to the high variance of reported total procedure cost of CoolSculpting procedures:

  • Applicators Used: CoolSculpting utilizes various applicators, depending on the area being treated. There are specific applicators designed for various purposes, such as a small applicator (CoolMini) designed for the chin and a flat applicator for areas that don’t suction well. In addition, there is a newer advancement called “CoolAdvantage” that allows for a shorter treatment time, but the applicator comes at a slightly higher cost.
  • Number of Sessions: Each CoolSculpting patient will have an individualized treatment plan that consists of varying number of treatments and treatment areas.

The only way to get a true cost estimate for CoolSculpting is to have a personal consultation with an experienced provider.

General Price Factors of Cosmetic Procedures

Finding price information for cosmetic procedures online can be difficult because there are many influential factors. Plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists typically do not publish cost information online or quote a price over the phone because the price will vary per patient depending on personal needs.

The price of many cosmetic procedures is the sum of a variety of common expenses including:

  • Geographic and/or market influences
  • Provider fees (more experienced providers typically charge higher rates)
  • Facility fees (these may be lower if the clinic has their own on-site surgery center)
  • Supplies (cannulas, implants, laser fibers, etc.)
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Medications and/or post procedure devices
  • Follow-up appointments

Financing Options

No matter what the price of your cosmetic procedure is, financing allows patients to pay for their procedure over smaller monthly installments. We currently offer finance options through Prosper Healthcare Lending and CareCredit. Click Here to learn more about financing options.

Very interesting and helpful post. A little depressing though, the procedure I’m interested in is very expensive 🙁

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

Some procedures are definitely expensive. However there is always financing available. Please let us know if you have any question on financing options!

  2. Avatar Jennifer says:

Any tips on negotiating discounts with plastic surgeons? What makes you guys come down on price lol

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Jennifer,

Negotiation the cost of a procedure may be difficult as the cost structure for many procedures is relatively fixed. Also, you may want to steer clear of any provider who is willing to negotiate dramatic drops in price. Any provider willing to take a price significantly below the market may be doing so out of of desperation .

Your best bet may be to ask the provider you are interested if they run any monthly specials on the specific procedure/treatment you are interested in.

      Thanks,
      WD Staff

  3. Avatar Tomas says:

How reliable do you think this data is? I see your disclosure regarding the data but just wanted to know your thoughts on accuracy

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

Hi Tomas, we think the data is pretty reliable and that Real Self is a great resource. However, as stated the cost data should only be taken with a grain of salt. Costs for nearly all procedures will differ on a case-by-case basis. Also as stated all cost data is posted from individual surveys, so there is no way to authenticate everything.

  4. Avatar Gilberto says:

Do you have any information regarding the price of breast augmentation outside of the U.S.? I would like to see if it really is less expensive in Mexico

  5. Avatar Ivan says:

Great post, will you update these numbers in 2017?

  6. Avatar Bailey says:

I’m considering Safelipo, I was wondering if you have any details of how much that costs? I see you have liposuction and SmartLipo, would I be looking at a similar cost?

  7. Avatar Uri says:

You should create a comparison of prices from 2016 to 2017. I’d be interested in learning which procedures increased vs decreased.

  8. Avatar Rachael says:

This is a really great and helpful piece. Thank you for sharing.

  9. Avatar Jason says:

Very informative and helpful piece. Kudos!

  10. Avatar Grace says:

Wait…. how did you get this data? I’m in California and I got a quote from a plastic surgeon which was way higher than what you have here.

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Grace,

To get the cost data we aggregated prices reported by users of Real Self (www.realself.com) by metro area. So you should take the data “with a grain of salt”. Pricing can be very different depending on many variables including surgeon experience, procedure complexity, etc. etc.

I hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any further questions.

      Thanks,
      Adam

Do you have an office closer to TN?
    Thank You!

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

Hi Loretta, unfortunately we just have our 9 Central Texas locations at this time 🙁

However, we will definitely be expanding with new locations closer to TN in the coming years. In TN, we’ve heard really good things about Dr. Breath (https://www.dbreath.com/).

If you’re ever in the Austin area or willing to travel for treatment please look us up!

      Thanks,

Thanks for this info on sclerotherapy cost. I was hoping it would be covered by my medical insurance but its now. That does not seem like too much though

You can get cheap plastic surgery overseas but be careful. You get what you pay for!

Would be very beneficial to include Austin pricing seeing such growth and migration from these other major cities, especially due to pandemic allowing remote work. Westlake Derm is based in Austin! Adding ATX would help more customers gain financial confidence with city comparison when doing research leading up to booking a consult, saving both the customers and doctors time.

    Hi Ana,

Great point on this! We will work to get that info and add the data the next time we update the pricing. We tend to do that semi-annually, so the next round should be coming up soon.

    Thanks,
    WD Staff

Awesome post, thanks so much for all this data. Its been hard to find out how much liposuction costs in my area (Phoenix, AZ) so this was helpful.

  23. Avatar Isabella says:

Do these costs already consider hospital expenses, I mean OR, Anesthesia, hospital stay or are they only considering medical team expenses?

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Isabella,

Great question! The reported costs are total costs of the procedure including facility expenses, anesthesia, provider fees, etc.

      We hope that helps!

      Thanks,
      WD Staff

Thanks so much for this post guys, it was pretty accurate. I called a couple of surgeons here in Miami and the costs you have are pretty much what I was quoted 🙂

  25. Avatar Gracie says:

Awesome resource, I found it spot on with what I’ve been quoted here in Miami. Thanks

  26. Avatar Grace says:

Really helpful post. I’d be interested to know how the current recession has impacted these prices. Just a thought for ya

  27. Avatar TV says:

Great resource, if anyone has any tips on how to negotiate prices down please reply to this comment 🙂

  28. Avatar Theo says:

  29. Avatar Greg says:

Do you guys do Miradry on the back?

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Greg,

Great question! Currently we only offer miraDry to treat the underarms as its the only area cleared by the FDA. Miradry is working on applicators for different body areas, we will carry those once they are approved and come out.

      Thanks,
      WD Staff

I was wondering how much does 3 skin graft surgeries cost for the middle of the stomach and side and on my ankle, as well as a tummy tuck, liposuction, surgery to get rid of my double chin and a hair transplant. I would like to have my surgery in late July early august of this year.
