Cosmetic Surgery Statistics: 2015 ASPS Plastic Surgery Report

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their annual plastic surgery report providing an interesting snapshot of cosmetic trends in the U.S.  The new report shows data on both surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2015.

In total, cosmetic procedures in the U.S. continued to grow in 2015 with 15.9 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States (a 2% increase over 2014).  Since 2000, the number of overall cosmetic procedures completed has risen 115%.

Here are some interesting highlights from the report:

Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures – Non-Surgical

  1. Botox – 6.7 million procedures (up 1% from 2014 and 759% from 2000)
  2. Dermal fillers – 2.4 million procedures (up 6% from 2014 and 274% from 2000)
  3. Chemical Peel – 1.3 million procedures (up 5% from 2014 and 14% since 2000)
  4. Laser hair removal – 1.1 million procedures (unchanged from 2014, but up 52% since 2000)
  5. Microdermabrasion – 800,340 procedures (down 9% from 2014 and 8% since 2000)

Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures – Surgical

  1. Breast augmentation – 279,143 procedures (down 2% from 2014, up 31% from 2000)
  2. Liposuction – 222,051 procedures (up 5% from 2014, down 37% from 2000)
  3. Nose reshaping – 217,979 procedures (unchanged from 2014, down 44% from 2000)
  4. Eyelid surgery – 203,934 procedures (down 1% from 2014 and 38% from 2000)
  5. Tummy tuck – 127,967 procedures (up 9% from 2014 and 104% from 2000)

Surgical Procedures with the Highest Growth Rate

While breast augmentation and liposuction continue to lead as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, neither treatment lands on the highest growth list. Here are the surgical procedures that have experienced the highest rate of growth (since the year 2000):

  • Upper arm lift: up 4,959%
  • Lower body lift: up 3,973%
  • Buttocks lift: up 252%
  • Tummy tuck: up 104%
  • Breast lift:  up 89%
  • Thigh lift: up 73%
