Here in Austin the fall season is in full swing and it’s the perfect time to transition your skin care regimen for the upcoming winter. With the heat and humidity of summer diminishing, here are some suggestions on preparing your skin for the upcoming cold:

Keep Using Sunscreen

The use of a great sunscreen is still pivotal even in the fall and winter months. Don’t let cooler temperatures fool you: harmful UV rays are still abundant. Studies show that most people get 23% of their sun damage by the age of 18 with 10% more each year thereafter. Regular sunscreen use is necessary at any age!

Here are some great choices for all around protection:

Do you dislike the task of applying sunscreen? Try Sunforgettable Mineral Sunscreen Brush from Colorescience, a lightweight SPF powder that’s applied by a self-dispensing brush.

Moisturize!

The cooler temperature and less humid conditions of the fall/winter season tend to rapidly dry out the skin. It’s important to regularly moisturize in order to maintain proper skin hydration. During the fall we typically recommend that people use a barrier lotion as it helps the skin develop a natural shield that maintains the skins natural oil and moisture. One of our favorites is SkinMedica’s Rejuvenative Moisturizer.

Exfoliate and Scrub

Did you use a fragrance infused body wash or body scrub during the summer? Typically fragrances, including those in skincare products, contain chemicals that can dry out and damage the skin. Replace fragrance containing products with natural body wash and scrubs to help the skin stay hydrated.

You can take skin cleansing to the next level by using new age skin cleansing systems provided by Foreo and Clarisonic. These devices are battery operated handheld devices that can help cleanse the skin better than by hand alone.

Improving Your Skin in Time for the Holidays

The intense heat and sun exposure of the summer months can have a definite impact on the complexion. Fall is a great time for people to undergo procedures like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and IPL based treatments to shed the damaged top layer of the skin.

  • Chemical Peels: Chemical peels are topically applied formulas that revitalize the skin surface by creating an even and controlled shedding of the skin cells. This allows new layers to be exposed, creating a fresh appearance and smoother texture to the skin surface. There are many peels available, and each works with a different formulation allowing for varying degrees of peeling.  Two of the most popular peels at Westlake Dermatology are Vitalize Peel and the VI Peel.
  • Microdermabrasion: We use DiamondTome technology to provide controlled skin resurfacing that is free of irritation and loose particles with no downtime required.
  • Laser Treatments: Fraxel, IPL Photofacials, and V-beam treatments are great for helping to correct summer damaged skin. The fall is an ideal time to consider these treatments, when sun exposure is typically more limited.
