A 2015 census published by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) showcased the increasing demand for hair transplant surgery, with over 397,000 transplant procedures performed in the U.S. in 2014. That’s an increase of 28% over procedures done in 2012. The demand for hair restoration is so great that the industry is now valued at approximately $2.5 billion annually.

Every year millions of Americans are affected by some form of hair loss or hair thinning. Here is a look at some interesting facts and statistics relating to hair loss.

Male Hair Loss

  • An estimated 35 million men in the U.S. suffer from some form of hair loss
  • 65% of these men will have visible hair loss by age 60

Female Hair Loss

  • An estimated 21 million women in the U.S. have issues of hair thinning or hair loss
  • 40% of women suffer visible hair loss by age 40

  • The average adult head has around 110,000 individual hair follicles
  • On average, hair loss sufferers will lose 100 hairs daily
