Plastic Surgery Costs in 2025: Average Prices + What to Expect

Originally published on May 2, 2014. Updated August 29, 2025 to include recent cost data.
When it comes to plastic surgery, one of the major questions prospective patients as is: “How much will it cost?” It’s a reasonable question, especially since finances play a big part in the consideration process. The answer, however, is not always straightforward, as the cost of plastic surgery can vary greatly due to several factors including the surgeon’s expertise, the location of the practice, the type of procedure, and the individual needs of the patient.
In this guide, we will review the average costs of the most common procedures, explain what those costs typically include (and do not include), and help you understand why prices can vary so much.
Average national costs of popular plastic surgery procedures
We have compiled the average national cost of most major plastic surgery procedures for reference with the help of RealSelf.com. RealSelf is an online hub that allows users to ask questions and share personal experiences about cosmetic surgeries. Physicians who are registered with the site are able to post responses. A common question that many users post is in regard to pricing. Many cosmetic surgery patients across the U.S. post the final costs of their surgery which RealSelf aggregates to display averages.
Here are the average national costs of the most popular procedures (data updated on August 29, 2025):

| Liposuction | $8,774 |
| Smartlipo | $6,408 |

What the Average Cost Includes (and Doesn’t Include)
What’s Typically Included:
- Surgeon’s Fee: The professional fee for the surgeon’s expertise, time, and technique. This varies greatly in terms of the skill and experience of the surgeon
- Material Costs: Breast implants, etc.
- Anesthesia Fees: Charged by an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. May vary greatly depending on the length and type of procedure.
- Facility or Hospital Fees: The cost of using an accredited surgical center or hospital, which covers operating room time, surgical staff, and equipment. This can vary greatly dependent on the type and location of the facility.
- Medical Tests and Pre-Op Evaluations: Bloodwork, EKGs, or other testing needed before surgery.
- Post-Surgery Garments and Medications: Compression garments, prescription pain medication, or antibiotics may be provided.
- Follow-Up Visits: Most practices include routine post-operative visits in your initial quote.
What’s Often Not Included (But Patients May Face):
- Travel and Lodging: If you’re traveling to see a specialist or out-of-town surgeon, you may need to budget for hotels, flights, or gas.
- Time Off Work: Recovery can mean lost wages, especially if you don’t have paid time off.
- Childcare or Help at Home: Some patients need assistance during recovery, particularly after more extensive surgeries.
- Additional Supplies: Items like scar creams, extra compression garments, or medical pillows for sleeping may not be covered.
- Revision Surgeries: While rare, touch-ups or corrective procedures may not be included in the initial cost.
- Long-Term Maintenance Treatments: Non-surgical add-ons such as Botox®, fillers, or skin resurfacing may be recommended later to maintain results.
By understanding both the included and potential additional expenses, patients can plan more realistically for the overall investment and avoid unexpected surprises.
The Importance of Safety and Quality Over Cost Alone
It may be tempting to choose the lowest-priced option, but when it comes to surgery, cheaper is not always better. Patients should be cautious of medical tourism packages or providers without board certification. Lower fees sometimes mean cutting corners on safety, anesthesia, or accreditation—which can lead to serious complications or disappointing results.
Investing in a board-certified plastic surgeon who operates in accredited facilities ensures your health and your outcome remain the top priority. While this may mean paying more upfront, the long-term benefits of safety and quality results far outweigh the risks of bargain options.
When selecting a plastic surgeon, consider the following:
- Choose a surgeon with an abundance of experience and documentation of previous surgeries. For a plastic surgery procedure, choose a plastic surgeon rather than a doctor from another specialty that performs plastic surgery.
- Look for a surgeon that you are comfortable with and agree with how he or she plans to perform the surgical procedure.
- It is important to ensure that the physician you choose understands the goals you have in mind and agrees that they are realistic and attainable.
- Make sure your surgery will be performed in a properly credentialed operating room.
- It is important to select a physician who is using high quality products (such as implants) from a reputable manufacturer.
- Be weary of physicians who offer pricing significantly lower than national or regional averages or bargain/gimmicky prices, such as Groupon or “deal of the day” offers.
- Be certain that the quoted price you receive includes all expenses (i.e. no hidden fees).
Financing and Insurance Considerations
Most cosmetic surgeries are considered elective, which means insurance typically does not cover them. However, certain procedures may qualify for coverage if they serve a functional purpose. Examples of procedures that might qualify for some form of medical insurance coverage include:
- Breast Reduction for relief of chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain.
- Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) if drooping eyelids impair vision.
- Reconstructive Surgeries such as breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
For procedures not covered by insurance, there are several financial companies who provide monthly payment financing for cosmetic procedures. This allows patients to undergo their treatment immediately and pay for it overtime. Most of these companies will even offer 0% interest financing if the loan is paid within a certain period (we offer several great financing options though our partners Cherry, Care Credit, and Prosper).
How Patients Can Get an Accurate Quote
While online resources and national averages are useful, the only way to know your exact cost is to meet with a surgeon. During a consultation, your surgeon will:
- Review your medical history.
- Discuss your goals and desired outcomes.
- Examine your anatomy to determine the best approach.
- Provide a customized treatment plan and a written quote.
This ensures you understand the full scope of your procedure, including all fees, so you can make an informed decision. Make sure to be explicit when it comes to cost, ask any prospective surgeon to itemize the quote and include all potential fees so you have full clarity on what to expect!

Great summary, hard to find cosmetic surgery pricing. THis really helped
Great post Collecting all this data is a great idea
So is the price of plastic surgery vary greatly from state to state? I’m looking in California, is it worth it for me to come out to Austin?
Hi Summer, thanks for your question. A couple of months ago we actually crunched some cost data from various metro areas in the U.S. and made a pretty cool post: https://www.westlakedermatology.com/blog/cosmetic-treatments-cost-guide/.
Please check that out!
Excellent data and idea, thanks for posting 🙂
just want to make sure…are these prices all inclusive or do you still need to add the hospital, etc
nice work…so hard to find this info…are these prices all inclusive or just the surgeon´s fee
Hi William, thanks for your feedback and for reading our posts. The numbers are all inclusive, however keep in mind that they are directly reported from individual RealSelf users. The final numbers are also averages, true pricing can vary greatly based on many factors. However we feel these numbers offer a good “yard stick” for comparison.
We actually went a step further and broke down costs in terms of major U.S. metro areas here: https://www.westlakedermatology.com/blog/cosmetic-treatments-cost-guide/
Thanks again!

This is very interesting, very smart guys!
Great summary. If I can advise, look at prices abroad. If you get a good ticket, you can save a lot of money. My own experience. I was in the Czech Republic in January. At the Formé clinic has taken great care of me and price was almost half.
Thank you so very much for this useful information!!
Hello there I have an issue with one said of my face (the left side ) seems to be more slanted than the right said which makes my face look awkward and asymmetrical I can provide pictures can you please give advice on what surgery that would be suitable for me
Hi Sahra, Sorry to hear about that issue. Unfortunately it will be impossible for us to send you any sort of medical recommendations solely using a picture. We would have to have you come in for an in-person consultation. If you are in the Austin area, please give us a call at 512.328.3376 to setup a consultation!
Thanks,

I can’t seem to find price info on treatment for cellulite treatment:front & back of thighs. I would like to do the math and figure my monthly payments for 6 months. I can’t do that until I get a realistic quote from someone that works there. I dont want to schedule an appointment to get an answer because I work a lot. If anyone can answer this please let me know. Thank you so much!
Hi Erin, We completely understand the crunch for time! I forwarded you message to our consultants who should be able to give you a price range over email or phone. This will give you a pretty good idea of what you are looking at. Then an exact price and treatment plan can be provided after an in-person consultation (should you wish to pursue this further).
Thanks again for reading our post and submitting your inquiry!

What about combined procedures? For ex:
Tummy Tuck with arm lift
Or
Thigh Lift with calf and back lift
Hi Rivkie,
Thanks for this great question! Unfortunately combination procedures like the ones you describe do not have any real data reported. I think part of the reason for this is the cost would really differ greatly from patient to patient, especially when individual procedures are combined. So unfortunately we do not have any real insight in that 🙁
However your best bet if you are interested in a combination procedure is to is to do multiple in-office consultations with a few different providers in your area.
Sorry we can’t be more help but we appreciate your comment!
Thanks,
WD Staff
I have a problem with the upper arm specially Bicebs because of operation done by un experienced young doctors who are available at the time of incident and i was told that i need plastic surgery to overcome this
Hi Omar,
Sorry to hear about this. You definitely want to reach out to an board certified plastic surgeon. If you are in the Austin area please feel free to give us a call (512.328.3376) to setup a consultation!
Thanks,
WD Staff
Very interesting, will you continue to update this for accurate pricing?
We will continue to update this post with current pricing data. This usually occurs yearly, so we should have 2019 numbers in January or February 2020!
Thanks,
WD Staff
These “averages” are severely misrepresented. Most real self doctors are severely unqualified and these aren’t the real averages. Real national averages that show all the averages in the U.S. including real self are thousands below these prices. These prices that are given are for the absolute best surgeons with thousands of extrodinary before and after pics. That are truly talented in specialize in 1 field. An example is like Joe Niamtu. Most of the Doctors on real self charge you premium prices and offer you below average results!! Tread carefully and do your research!!
Hi Christopher,
Thanks for reading out post and submitting your great comment to our community. We agree with you in one respect, its very hard to determine average procedure costs. We used RealSelf data because it’s readily available and valuable (as long as all submissions are really by patients as their site states).
In the end procedure price can be very different for each individual patient, as patient need can greatly vary. As always, we advise perspective patients to go for in-office consultations with multiple highly qualified providers, its the only way to get a true gauge of cost.
Thanks again for submitting your comment!
WD Staff
Excellent!! This was very helpful for me. Will you update this for 2019 numbers?
Hi Costen, thanks for reading and commenting on our post! We will update the numbers for 2019, we usually get the next set of data a month or two into the new year. Once we update, we will make sure to rename the post “Updated 2019” so readers know its up to date. We hope to have this completed by early next month!
Thanks,
WD Staff
Very helpful post, thanks for helping me do my research on cost haha
Thanks for sharing the list of average costs, I understand it is not fully accurate but its a great resource just to see ballpark pricing.
i have query
Hi Pooja, please feel free to add your question here or you can give us a call at 512-328-3376.
Thanks,
WD Staff
Great post! Thanks for sharing useful information with us. I’ll make sure to show it to our patients here in Oz 🙂
Question… breast reduction and lift – what is an average cost and recovery time? Also, I’ve lost almost 80 lbs and have a tummy flap of extra skin. It does cause rashes and other various problems. Just curious about cost and recovery as well. But I’m also wondering, will insurance pay for part of the excesses skin removal due to medically creating problems?
Thank you – Shannan
Hi Shannon,
Thanks for reading our post and submitting your great question. Also congratulations on the weight loss!
As always exact cost and recovery info can only be provided after an in-person assessment. Please give us a call at 512-328-3376 to setup a free consultation! We’ll be able to give you exact info after seeing you in person.
In general, breast reduction/lift procedures can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks for recovery. We actually have a good blog post on that here: https://www.westlakedermatology.com/blog/breast-lift-recovery-tips-and-timeline/. Cost can range anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 depending on the specifics of the procedure. We also offer no interest financing!
For the tummy flap you may need some form of abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery. It could be a simple mini-tuck which has a short recovery time (see https://www.westlakedermatology.com/blog/tummy-tuck-recovery-tips/).
Please give us a call at 512-328-3376 to discuss in more detail, these ranges really don’t mean anything as recovery and cost is greatly dependent on the individualized procedure need of each patient.
Thanks,
WD staff
This is a great idea for a post, real creative guys
Thank you so very much for this useful information!! Very interesting, will you continue to update this for accurate pricing?
Thanks Chad, we’ll keep updating it!
Very efficiently written information, and I can confirm its pretty accurate. Great job!
Great Stuff! Thanks for sharing these type of valuable info.
Any major pricing changes in 2021? Will you update this?
Hi Ahkdideab,
We will update the pricing, we usually do it mid-year. So look out for the latest version in May or June!
We do, however, find cost changes to be modest from year to year. So I think the pricing listed probably reflects current pricing (in early 2021).
Thanks,
WD Staff
Great post on the pricing, super helpful
Nice Blog! The information you have provided is incredibly detailed and insightful. Thanks for doing this 🙂
Thanks for this post, its so hard to get pricing for any plastic surgery procedure. Most sites make you call to learn more
Will you update this post with 2024 prices?
Stay tuned Wyatt, we are working on that and hope to have this published soon!
