Bemotrizinol Sunscreen: What FDA Approval Means

Sunscreen is one of the most important ways to protect the skin from sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. For many years, sunscreen formulas available in the United States have had fewer UV filter options than products sold in many other countries. That’s why the FDA’s recent approval of bemotrizinol is such an important development.
What Is Bemotrizinol?
Bemotrizinol, also called BEMT (chemical name bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine), is a chemical sunscreen filter that has been used internationally for decades. Like other chemical sunscreen ingredients, bemotrizinol works by absorbing ultraviolet radiation before it can damage the skin. What makes it especially interesting is that it provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA rays.
This matters because UV rays affect the skin in different ways:
- UVA rays are longer wavelengths that penetrate the skin more deeply and contribute to premature aging, wrinkles, pigmentation, and long-term skin damage. UVA can easily penetrate standard residential, commercial, and vehicle window glass
- UVB rays are more closely associated with sunburns. UVB does not easily penetrate standard window glass.
- Both UVA and UVB rays cause skin cancer.
U.S. sunscreens protect against UVB rays well but are less effective against blocking UVA rays from causing harm. Bemotrizinol could give sunscreen makers another tool for improving that broad-spectrum coverage.
How Does Bemotrizinol Protect the Skin?
Bemotrizinol protects the skin by absorbing UV radiation and helping convert that energy into non-harmful heat, which is then released from the skin. In simple terms, it helps reduce the amount of harmful UV energy that can reach and damage skin cells.
How Is Bemotrizinol Different From Other Chemical Sunscreen Ingredients?
While there are many other types of chemical sunscreen ingredients, Bemotrizinol has several features that make it stand out:
Broad-Spectrum Coverage
Some sunscreen ingredients are stronger in one part of the UV spectrum than another. For example, one ingredient may provide strong UVB protection, while another is needed to help improve UVA coverage.
Bemotrizinol is highly effective in filtering both UVA and UVB rays. This makes it especially useful in broad-spectrum sunscreen formulas, where the goal is to protect against skin cancers and by way of preventing both the sunburn-causing UVB rays and deeper-penetrating UVA rays that contribute to aging and long-term skin damage.
Photostability

Why Did It Take So Long for the U.S. to Approve Bemotrizinol?
One of the most common questions about bemotrizinol is why did it took so long to become available in the United States, especially if it was already being used in other countries?
The 20+ year delay had more to do with the nature of time-consuming and costly regulations than the ingredient being brand new (or under studies). In the U.S., sunscreens are regulated as over-the-counter drugs. That means active ingredients must meet FDA standards for safety and effectiveness before they can be included in the OTC sunscreen monograph.
In many other countries, sunscreen ingredients have moved through different regulatory pathways. As a result, international sunscreen formulas have often had access to more modern UV filters sooner than U.S. products.
Bemotrizinol’s approval is significant because it represents the first new active ingredient added to the U.S. OTC sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s. It may also signal a more modern path for future sunscreen innovation.
Is Bemotrizinol Safe?
Based on the FDA’s published review, bemotrizinol is considered generally recognized as safe and effective when used according to the approved conditions. It has been approved at concentrations up to 6% for use in sunscreen products for adults and children 6 months and older.
Safety data reviewed by the FDA found low overall absorption and did not show irritation, sensitization, phototoxicity, or photo allergenicity in the reviewed dermal studies.
Is Bemotrizinol Better Than Mineral Sunscreens?
Not necessarily. While bemotrizinol gives patients another strong sunscreen option, it does not make mineral sunscreens obsolete.
Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which sit on the skin and help reflect and scatter UV radiation in addition to absorbing UV rays. They are often recommended for patients with very sensitive skin, certain allergies, young children, or those who prefer mineral-only formulas.
Bemotrizinol is different because it is a chemical UV filter. It may help brands create broad-spectrum formulas that are lighter, more transparent, and easier to wear daily. However, the best sunscreen is still the one a patient will use consistently, apply generously, and reapply correctly.
Will Bemotrizinol Make Sunscreens Feel Better?
One reason many people do not use enough sunscreen is that they dislike the way it feels. A sunscreen may be effective on paper, but if it feels greasy, heavy, sticky, chalky, or leaves a white cast, patients are less likely to apply it every day.
Bemotrizinol may help improve sunscreen wearability because it can be formulated without combining many other chemical sunscreens, stabilizers, or tints, and can give rise to lightweight, transparent products that are non-irritating. This could make it especially valuable for daily facial sunscreens, patients with deeper skin tones who want less visible residue, and anyone who struggles to find a formula they enjoy wearing.
What Should Patients Look for on Labels?
As bemotrizinol-containing sunscreens become available (expected in late summer or early fall 2026, patients may see the ingredient listed in several different ways including:

Important Note: the longstanding rules around sunscreen still apply! Look for a high-quality product made from by a reputable brand. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for daily use.
It is always important to use the sunscreen properly and consistently in addition to wearing UPF protective clothing, eyewear, and hats when possible. Apply enough sunscreen product to cover exposed skin, and reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, or sooner after swimming or sweating, taking note of whether your sunscreen is labeled, “water resistant,” or not.
