Does Your Skincare Regimen Need An Update?

When it comes to skincare routines, consistency is important. However, being too consistent can be a negative. Is your skincare regimen stuck in a rut? If you’ve been using the same products year after year it might be time to shake things up!

Why update?

You may have figured out a good skincare routine that works pretty well with your skin. However, there are two primary reasons for change:

  1. Skincare is ever-evolving, with new and better ingredients hitting the market every month. You may be able to find a product that works even better with your skin.
  2. The human skin is prone to changing over time. Compared to a year ago your skin may have different needs.

Set goals

Begin by assessing the current condition and traits of your skin alongside what you are trying to accomplish. Knowing your skin type is extremely important. Also think about your goals. Do you want to minimize occasional breakouts or do you want to eliminate severe sun damage?

Do your homework

Armed with an understanding of your skin’s needs and your desired outcomes, it’s time to do some research. Hop online and visit blogs to learn about new products. There are also many great review sites with in depth and unbiased reviews from real users. Finally, asking your personal network of friends and family members can be helpful sometimes too. However, keep in mind that what works for them may not necessarily work for you.

Try some new brands

You don’t always need to use products from the same brand. Branch out and try an offering from a different company. There may be some benefits of sticking to a single line, but not always.  Don’t be afraid to mix it up.

Check out recently added brands like SkinBetter Science and SkinCeuticals.

Spend wisely

Skip high priced direct-sales skincare products in favor of more trusted and established brands. Often the sellers of direct sale lines do not have a background in skin care and are willing to sell you products that are not complementary to your skin or your goals.

Also splurge on the products that will stay on your skin the longest, such as overnight treatments and retinols. Since these products will remain on the skin for longer periods of time you want high quality. If you want to look for products to spend less on, cleansers are a good place to start.

Give new products a try

In addition to free samples many cosmetic sellers offer, most brands also have trial sized versions of their products. Sometimes the only way to see if a product is right for your skin is to give it a try. First, apply the new product to an isolated area of your skin to make sure your skin will not have any adverse reactions to the product. Then try to use the product consistently for two weeks; a long enough period to see if that new product is beneficial.

When trying a new product, it’s important to only change one product in your regimen at a time.  If your skin has a negative reaction you’ll be able to pinpoint exactly what caused it.  If you switch several items at once, you won’t know the source of the problem.
