Smooth Legs Without Shaving – Laser Hair Removal FAQ

With summer just around the corner many Austinites are preparing to show off more skin. Along with getting in shape for the new bikini, another issue people consider is their body hair.

Shaving and waxing are common hair removal options but they often irritate the skin and are counterproductive as they actually trigger additional hair growth. There are other hair removal creams, lotions, or as seen on TV products on the market as well; most of which are ineffective, or worse, dangerous to the skin. The safest and most effective hair removal option today is laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal uses infrared light to target the pigment in the hair follicles (we use the LightSheer® laser hair removal system). The light converts into heat, which causes follicular destruction (i.e. the hair follicle is destroyed). The treatment is relatively painless and is a permanent solution for getting rid of unwanted or embarrassing body hair. Additionally, because the hair is completely removed from the follicle, laser hair removal prevents the “shadow” effect some people experience with shaving or waxing.

We thought it would be helpful to cover five of the most common questions we receive from prospective patients concerning laser hair removal:

How effective is laser hair removal?

Laser-based hair removal is very effective, with many patients enjoying significant hair reduction after only a few treatments. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have a combination of darker hair and lighter skin as the laser light will not be significantly absorbed by the surrounding skin. However, newer lasers can effectively treat patients with darker skin and/or lighter hair. As with any procedure, results vary per patient.

How painful are the treatments?

Laser hair removal is very tolerable for most patients without any need for numbing prior to the procedure. Many patients describe the feeling of the laser as similar to a rubber band snap on the skin. If the treatment does make the patient too uncomfortable a skin numbing agent can be utilized, however it is typically not needed. There is no pain or downtime once the laser is taken off the skin.

What areas can be treated?

The most popular treatment areas for women include the underarms (axilla), legs, bikini, lip, and chin, while popular areas for men are the chest and back. However, hair removal can be accomplished on most areas of the body.

How many laser hair removal treatments are required to see results?

Most patients require six to eight treatments spaced six weeks apart to enjoy the full effect followed by occasional maintenance treatments. However each individual is different, some people require more or less treatments. Hormones and other factors can play a part in the number of treatments required.

Is it a permanent solution?

Laser hair removal patients enjoy permanent hair reduction. Many people do require occasional maintenance treatments (sometimes once a year or so) after their series of treatments to maintain the results.

Laser hair removal can be a life-changing procedure. Most of all, the number one comment I hear from patients after the procedure is, “Why did I wait so long to do this?”

Does laser hair removal work on light brown pubic hair?

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

Hi Kayla, great question! Laser hair removal can work on lighter hair in the pubic area. However, a higher volume of treatment sessions may be necessary, typically 4-8 treatment sessions may be necessary to permanently remove all hair in that area.

I would highly encourage you to get a consultation with an experienced technician.

  6. Avatar Laura says:

Will it work on the peach fuzz on the face, if it’s fairly light?

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

Hi Laura, while it is possible to effectively treat peach fuzz, it can be a bit difficult as the hair is fine and light colored. Thus it may take more time and treatments to deliver the desired final result. Please feel free to give us a call and schedule an appointment. We’ll be able to give you a better idea of what you’re looking at.

Hi, i had got around 18 laser treatments for my face from somewhere else. and my facial hair growth has worsened . I have thick coarse hair where i had thin fine hair. I don’t have any hormonal imbalance. Do you think you guys can help and know what you are doing?

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Shikha,

I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I think the best thing to do would be to have you come in for an evaluation. That way we can see the exact condition of the follicles and learn more about the type of laser hair removal laser your previous provider was using. Please give us a call at 512.328.3376!

  12. Avatar Stefan says:

Thanks for mentioning that you should get six to eight treatments for the best results and that laser hair removal is a permanent solution. My wife has been interested in getting laser hair removal treatment but wasn’t sure how often she needed to go. I will let her know that she will only need to go a few times for permanent removal.

  13. Avatar Sarah says:

What is the name a machine you all use for laser hair removal? I just moved from NYC and looking to continue the service I started. Please let me know what machine you’re using so I can decide what to book.

I’m particularly looking for Diolaze by InMode or Triton by InMode. Thanks!

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Sarah,

Great question! We’re currently using Lightsheer machines, both the Duet and Desire (which is ideal for treating patients with darker skin tones). Through trial and error we’ve found Lightsheer to be the best laser on the market today. It’s very efficient and provided the best results of all lasers we’ve tried.

  14. Avatar Myra says:

Do you have a laser that works on brown skin?

    • WD Staff WD Staff says:

      Hi Myra,

We do have a laser that can safely and effectively treat darker skin tones! However, it is important to understand that treating darker skin is both more difficult and often results require more treatments.

We can give you an estimate on the number of treatments needed (and cost) after assessing you in-person. Please feel free to give us a call to setup a consultation.
